In the Ancient times island of Crete was called as "Keret or Kart". Georgians call themselves Kartvels, Tbilisi city is called "Kart" in the Georgian languages: Mingrelian, Svanian and Lazian. The most important region of Georgia, historically in the middle ages was Kartli. now there are 2 regions of Kartli: Kvemo Kartli and Shida Kartli. word "Kart" in Mingrelian and Svanian means the City with a fence, with a form of a circle.
It is also interesting, that Eastern Crete is called as "Lasithi" even today. one of the Georgian peoples are Lazs. descendants of Colchians. now their historical territory is in Turkey and this territory is called in Georgian as "Lazeti" (The land of Lazs) - "eti" is a Georgian suffix to designate, which people owns a particular land or a country. for example Russia in Georgian is "Rus-eti", India - "Indo-eti", Turkey - "Turk-eti" and etc.
